The Daily Point – FIGHT FOR WHAT’S RIGHT

Video Posted on Updated on

In about four weeks, voters will elect a mayor in New York City and a governor in New Jersey. With all the challenges facing local residents from transportation to taxes it’s incredible that the candidates leading in the polls do nothing except talk about President Donald Trump and national issues.  It’s time to hold politicians accountable before they win office.  Let’s hear real plans about public transportation fixes in the NYC and in Jersey.  And what about the fact that NJ has become unaffordable to average working and middle class families?  It’s time we hear real plans to fix what’s broken instead of partisan talking points that serve no one except the candidates ambition.

The race to replace Governor Christie is in high gear and only five weeks out. The Republican candidate Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno has pulled closer to Democratic nominee, Phil Murphy. Why is the race so close in New Jersey where Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly two to one? Simple answer is taxes. They’re too high for the average middle class and working class family to afford. Kim Guadagno has a plan to lower them and Phil Murphy has pledged to raise taxes in order to pay for many new programs. Could this be a repeat of the Corzine/Christie battle in 2009? Five weeks to go…

Repeal and Replace…Governor Christie

Friday January 20th marks the inauguration of the 45th President of the United States.  President Donald Trump took the oath of office at noon and a new era of politics began.  As Piers Morgan put it in a tweet…

So the Trump era begins.  We’ll have to see how the new President’s policies impact the economy and security in our region.  I’m confident that his plan and leadership ability will be enough to succeed and earn him a second term.  More on the President in later blogs…for now, the race to Drumthwacket begins in earnest.

NJ101.5

This morning’s segment of #DigginInWithKim took quite a turn.  Lt. Gov Kim Guadagno took the opportunity to agree with me and present her position on why we need to vote no on the ballot question regarding the Transportation Trust Fund.  During the broadcast, the Governor’s spokesman issued a statement attacking Kim G going so far as to say this must be a misunderstanding.  It would be difficult to find a more arrogant, out-of-touch and ignorant politician in America today.  His approval ratings speak volumes considering that he’s lower than anyone in NJ, including the guy under indictment.

This morning was more than a typical conversation with New Jersey Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno.  She comes into our New Jersey 101.5 studios every other Thursday for a special segment called “#DigginInWithKim”.  Today she told me that the segment should be renamed, “Sparrin’ with Spadea”.  Guess she’s been listening over the past two weeks as I’ve been very critical about the lack of leadership, particularly among Republicans in NJ to oppose the largest tax increase since the 1990’s.  At one point during the discussion Kim mentioned that electing more Republicans will help solve the problem.  But I countered by reminding her that it was due to the Republicans cowering under pressure from GOP Governor Christie and Democratic Senate President Sweeney that enabled the tax to be passed in the first place.

Had a great conversation with our friends Daniel Regan and his mom Lynn Regan today on the radio this morning.  Daniel is going strong now five years after his victory over heroin.  That’s right, he beat it.  Now, he’ll tell you that everyone has their own way of overcoming adversity, but for him it’s not a day to day struggle, any longer.  He fought the fight against the devastating drug and after several failed rehab attempts and being discovered by his mom homeless in an abandoned hotel in California, he’s drug free and helping others.  Daniel is an inspiring person for sure. Although he’s only in his mid-twenties, he’s had a lifetime of struggle, suffering and success.

Had a great conversation with New Jersey first Lt. Governor today, Kim Guadagno.  We discussed the latest proposal to raise the gas tax, the Governor’s bold idea to reduce property taxes and a little Star Wars…

Darth OrohoThe Star Wars conversation was in reference to the ‘Lightsaber’ I brought into the studio courtesy of our Chasing News Senior Producer Jason M. Rosenberg.  It was part of my message this week pushing back on #DarthOroho, the Republican State Senator pushing for a higher gas tax.  Oroho has been using scare tactics about the financial depletion of the Transportation Trust Fund and the ‘imminent danger’ facing commuters from NJ’s infrastructure.  Of course, as is typically the case in politics, much of what is being used to justify a huge burden on working and middle class families is an exaggeration.

Quite a morning on the air today.  My day got jumpstarted by an article about State Senator Steve Oroho who has already conceded that the gas tax will be raised  and wants to offset the tax with an income tax deduction.  Wow.  What a shell game being played by the NJ Legislature.  More specifically the Republicans.  I’ll get to them in a minute.

Peg Wright

What a morning.  Spent almost two hours on the show this morning talking with the founder and leaders of the Center for Great Expectations.  It’s a Jersey based group focused on helping homeless women with substance addictions.  Peg Wright founded the organization in 1998 based on inspiration she received from a Catholic nun.  Dr. Debbie Ruisard is the clinical director for the center and both women were with me at New Jersey 101.5 this morning.  Many of the women that they have been treating recently have been caught up in the serious heroin epidemic which has been gripping the nation and New Jersey in particular in recent years.

Kim Guadagno Gets It

Had a great conversation with New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno this morning during her visit to NJ 101.5.  She had originally been scheduled to come on my show as she’s done several times before, to discuss the NJ job market and the jobs that have been created over the past year in the private sector.  The challenge was that I had started the morning off talking about heroin in Jersey, specifically reacting to Governor Christie’s comments yesterday about how many lives Narcan has saved over the past year and a half.  Anytime you bring up addiction, specifically the growing heroin epidemic, the phones get flooded with calls from concerned parents, former addicts and friends of people who have fallen victim to the drug.  Gotta give the LG credit, she rolled with the new topic immediately and was helpful to several callers calling about the red tape at our state clinics preventing some people from getting the help they need when they need it.  Obviously we weren’t going to solve the heroin problem in a couple hours on the radio but as she pointed out, keeping the conversation going is critical as we work toward solutions.
