Had a great opportunity to help congratulate and send off a brave, patriotic young man over the weekend as he prepares to depart for Parris Island, South Carolina. Our friend Jax’s little brother Matt is headed off to the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot. He’ll go through the full training as a US Marine recruit before heading to Ole Miss as a freshman in January. Although I suspect he’s got his eyes on more than just reserve status in the USMC, but that’s a discussion I’m sure he’ll be having over the next few months with his drill instructor and his parents.
It’s encouraging to meet young people with the focus, dedication and sense of patriotic duty to to chooses the much more difficult path of military service over the typical high school graduate path of heading off to college and figuring out a major…at some point.
We were proud to be included among Matt and Jax’s family and friends at a backyard BBQ that was a perfect Jersey celebration of the accomplishment of graduating high school and making a decision that will shape the rest of this young man’s life. He’s got the character, focus and determination to be an outstanding leader in the Marine Corps.
My wife Jodi and I wish him well and will pray for the strength and safety of all the young men and women who choose to serve their country as members of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines”.
Hang in there John and Jill. The adventure is just beginning for sure. As concerned and somewhat anxious you’ll be every time the news reports on another hot spot around the globe requiring the attention of the Marine Corps, you’ll derive some comfort by the fact that the nation is only free, prosperous and strong because of the sacrifice and commitment of the young people willing to give up comfort for sacrifice and hardship. It’s decisions like Matt’s that gives hope and promise to the next generation of Americans.
And Matt…go get ‘em #DevilDog.
